USCG GoM Oil Spill Surpasses Initial Estimates

first_imgzoom The amount of oil spilled in the Gulf of Mexico a week ago may be around 16,000 barrels, almost double from the initial estimates, according to the United States Coast Guard. The offshore oil and gas operator LLOG Exploration Offshore earlier informed that the oil released from a damaged pipeline at the Delta House floating production facility was estimated in the amount of some 7,950 to 9,350 barrels. The USCG and the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) have been coordinating with the responsible party and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to locate and respond to any oil that reaches the surface.Multiple daily over flights and remotely operated underwater vehicle inspections have been conducted with no recoverable oil detected.Skimming vessels from Clean Gulf Associates and the Marine Spill Response Corporation also remain on standby.USCG informed that surface and subsea trajectory models calculated by the responsible party and NOAA indicate that any discharged oil will drift in a southwesterly direction and is not expected to impact the shoreline.Calculations indicate that the discovery of any recoverable oil is unlikely due to the depth and pressure at which the oil was released. The oil was discharged from a small crack in a pipeline that was pressurized to more than 3,000 psi and located some 5,000 feet under water, 40 miles southeast of Venice, Louisiana. This high-pressure discharge through a small opening likely caused the oil to be broken down into small particles and disperse into deep-water currents prior to reaching the surface.Water samples taken along the trajectory path at various depths have not detected the presence of oil, USCG confirmed.“While the reported discharge amount is very significant, we are confident in the calculations completed by the LLOG and NOAA scientists,” said Cmdr. Heather Mattern from US Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Morgan City, Louisiana. “Additionally, the lack of any recoverable oil identified by over flights and subsea inspections conducted throughout the past week supports this explanation,” Mattern added. The flowline release began in the morning hours of October 11 from a fracture in a jumper pipe leading from Mississippi Canyon Block 209, Well No. 1 to a manifold located on the seafloor.Once identified, the pipeline leak was isolated and stopped on Thursday morning, however, the incident was said to be the largest oil spill in the US since the 2010 Deepwater Horizon catastrophe, Bloomberg earlier reported. The cause of the incident is under investigation.last_img read more

Ed Sheeran Van Morrison to Join Roger Daltrey and Friends in Epic

first_imgRock and Roll Hall of Famers Van Morrison and Roger Daltrey will join music superstar Ed Sheeran to headline a once-in-a-generation private concert this week in the L.A. area to benefit UCLA Health and Teen Cancer America (TCA), the national non-profit founded by Daltrey and Pete Townshend of The Who.The invite-only event, the fifth in a series that began a decade ago to raise awareness and funds for both programs, will include Judd Apatow serving as Master of Ceremonies and Howie Mandel serving as auctioneer for a rare collection of music memorabilia and art that will be auctioned off throughout the evening.Included in the lot is a guitar donated by The Buddy Holly Educational Foundation that experts are saying may be the most valuable ever built for a charity event. The handcrafted guitar, inspired by the Holly classic song, “Learning The Game,” is signed by 75 of the greatest living musicians including Eric Clapton, Robert Plant, Brian May, Paul McCartney, Donovan, Brian Wilson, Keith Richards, Dion, Peter Frampton, Graham Nash, Don Everly and Elvis Costello, just to name a few. Peter Bradley Jr. of The Buddy Holly Educational Foundation has spent the last 18 months traveling the world capturing the signatures and stories about how Holly inspired other artists, in preparation for donating the guitar to Teen Cancer America as part of a newly established partnership between the two organizations. It is expected to fetch north of $250,000 the evening of the event with some experts predicting it could approach the $1M mark.Other auction items include a mechanically and electrically refurbished Bally Pinball Wizard Machine built in 1975 to coincide with the release of the movie/rock opera “Tommy.” It has been autographed for the event by most of the stars of the film, including Daltrey, Townsend, Elton John, Tina Turner, Jack Nicholson, and Ann-Margret. Additional auction items include a first off the production line, limited edition The Who motorized scooter and high-value art from famed contemporary street-artist RETNA. The auction is being conducted live, and online here, by Heritage Auctions.last_img read more

Bank of England chief hints he will stay to help with Brexit

first_imgLONDON – Bank of England Governor Mark Carney all but confirmed Tuesday that he is to stay at the helm of the central bank for longer than planned to help ensure Britain leaves the European Union as smoothly as possible.Following days of speculation about an extension beyond his planned June 2019 departure, Carney told a committee of lawmakers that during “this critical period” everyone should do what they can to help the Brexit process.Carney, a Canadian, took the top job at the Bank of England in July 2013 on a five-year basis. He extended it by a further year in the aftermath of Britain’s vote in June 2016 to leave the EU.“Even though I have already agreed to extend my time to support a smooth Brexit, I am willing to do whatever else I can in order to promote both a smooth Brexit and an effective transition at the Bank of England,” he said Tuesday. With Brexit due March 29, 2019, Carney confirmed he has been in talks with Britain’s Treasury chief, Philip Hammond, about extending his tenure again.Carney, who is reportedly also interested in returning to Canadian politics, has said the government will announce details “in due course.” Media reports have suggested his tenure may be extended by about a year. Many backers of Brexit have accused Carney of taking sides during the Brexit referendum campaign, of being a leading proponent of so-called “Project Fear” when warning of the economic consequences of a vote to leave the EU. But many in the financial markets have been calling on Carney to stay longer to help reduce uncertainty. The British government’s discussions with the EU have struggled to make progress over the past few months, and Prime Minister Theresa May has suffered a series of resignations from her cabinet, including those of Boris Johnson as foreign secretary and David Davis as Brexit secretary. Her latest proposals for Brexit involve Britain maintaining many EU rules so British firms can keep trading easily in the European single market. Her plan has run into resistance from both the EU and within May’s Conservative Party. With the opposition Labour Party also seemingly split over how to approach Brexit, concerns have risen that Britain will end up crashing out of the EU with no deal and no transition period after Brexit day to help smooth the process.Though Carney said last month that the risks of a no-deal Brexit were “uncomfortably high,” he said Tuesday that some sort of agreement is still more likely.“The negotiations are getting to a critical stage and there’s still a wide range of views of potential outcomes and sometimes things don’t evolve as expected, so there is a chance for downside risks,” he said.He added, however, that the economy “by and large is operating as if there will be some form of agreement and some form of transition.” Only 20 per cent of firms have contingency plans for a no-deal Brexit, he said.Last month, the Bank of England raised its main interest rate by a quarter point to 0.75 per cent even though the economy has slowed. Its main reason for doing so was to contain inflation, which has risen above the 2 per cent target, largely as a result of a 15-per cent fall in the pound in the wake of the Brexit vote.Following Carney’s comments, the pound was little changed, down 0.2 per cent at $1.2941. Before the referendum, the pound was trading around $1.50.Carney said there could be “more positive momentum” behind the pound in the event of a Brexit agreement, but that it could fall again if there isn’t one.last_img read more

But Lebanon’s powerful parliament speaker, Nabih Berri, disagrees, saying a country paralyzed by its own divisions cannot successfully host a meeting of Arab nations. The turmoil is nothing new to Lebanon, a country fragmented along political fault lines.Zeina Karam And Bassem Mroue, The Associated Presslast_img read more
