Does last season’s fate await USC? (Counterpoint)

first_imgYes, yes, the circumstances do seem similar. Far too many students will be running around South Los Angeles in Charlie Sheen costumes (it’s Halloween weekend). Lee Corso will also wear the headwear of the team he picks to win Saturday. But the comparisons pretty much stop there. It’s 2011 and USC is clearly a better football team than it was 12 months ago.To make an obvious point, the Trojans are 3-0 this month. Last year, USC entered the game against Oregon with a mere 1-2 mark in October. The team has momentum this time around — there was no bye the week before. Things appear to be on the upswing. In USC’s last two contests, it has outscored both California and Notre Dame by a combined score of 61-26. In each of those games, it looks as if USC coach Lane Kiffin has grown as a play caller and as a coach. Hey, the results speak for themselves. But two things stand out most about this year’s group. For one, junior quarterback Matt Barkley’s development has only continued. He might not exactly be Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck, but he’s darn close. Through seven games, he has thrown for 2,006 yards with 19 touchdowns and four interceptions. His completion percentage also stands at 68 percent.By comparison, Luck has actually thrown for fewer yards — 1,888 of them. He has, however, posted a touchdown-to-interception of 20:3 and a 72 percent completion percentage.Secondly, USC’s defense is far better against the run than it was last season. Before Saturday night’s game against the Trojans, Notre Dame had been averaging 194 rushing yards per game, including 114 yards against Michigan State — the nation’s seventh best run defense. But the Irish finished with 41 yards on the ground and their season average dipped to 172 yards per game.ESPN might opt to bill Saturday’s matchup simply as a Luck versus Barkley showdown, but it’s going to be won — to steal an old football cliché — in the trenches.Stanford amassed 446 rushing yards last week against Washington. It ranks 17th nationally in rushing yards per game. But luckily for USC, its own defense is ranked 11th in rushing yards allowed per game. Something has to give, and for once, the breaks seem to be going USC’s way.Don’t tell me the Trojans haven’t played anyone, either. Granted, their opponents are a combined 24-25 this season, but the Cardinal’s 65-21 win over then-No. 25 Washington was its first victory this season against a team with a winning record. And it came at home.Last year’s Oregon team was ranked No. 1. It had defeated Tennessee in front of more than 100,000 fans in Knoxville, Tenn. It also beat Stanford by three touchdowns. This season, the No. 4 Cardinal, because of a nonconference slate that included just San Jose State and Duke and a weak Pac-12, remains somewhat of an enigma more than halfway through the season.Sure, Stanford is pretty good. Anyone will concede that. But so is USC, as testament to its more recent showings.A season ago, the Trojans lost to Oregon by 21 points. But with the way they are playing thus far in 2011, it’d be wise not to change the channel come Saturday. To steal a line from Corso, this one will be closer than the experts think.Click here for a different viewpoint.last_img read more

Back to Basics: The Rule of Thirds in Filmmaking

first_imgImage via Marvel Studios. In a typical shot, your subject should be somewhere within the grid divides, as you can see above. The subject can be both the character and the object, since they often work together. Each is at opposite sides of the frame, which draws equal attention to both subjects. Objects need room around them to enable the viewer to see them more clearly. If the character is in the middle of the frame, all attention who go to them, and the object would no longer be a critical piece of the frame. Using the Rule of Thirds can dramatically increase the look of your composition. Here’s a few tips on how to integrate this technique into your next shot.Cover image via Universal Pictures and Learn Online Video. When you’re first learning about cameras and shot composition, one of the basic concepts you encounter is the rule of thirds. If you haven’t heard of the rule yet, I like Grace Fussell‘s definition:Imagine a 3×3 grid on top of any image. You should align the key elements in the image according to this grid — at the ‘power points’ where the lines intersect, or along and within the vertical and horizontal lines. You can also combine these two arrangements for complex images with layers of subjects.Image via Shutterstock. As Fussell explains in this Shutterstock article, the lines on the 3×3 grid are the places where our eyes automatically look for information. When you put the main focus of your image along this grid, the result is more aesthetically pleasing to your viewer. If you are looking for the fundamentals of the rule of thirds in still images, check out Grace’s article. Here, I’ll focus on how to apply the rule of thirds to moving images.Placement Image via New Line Cinema.Another rule of thirds tactic is the concept of leading. This is when you place your subject on the opposite side of the frame from the object of his or her attention. This technique is psychological in nature because when your eyes look at incomplete information (such as an actor looking offscreen), they want to fill it to make it complete. In the image above, the subject is presenting something to a subject offscreen. Even though there is nothing in the left side of the shot, our minds automatically deduce that there is someone on the other side of that frame. If the subject had no lead room, the shot would just feel off.Eye Lines Image via Kvibe Productions.Using the rule of thirds is a great way to establish eye lines. Check out the shot above. Feels natural, right? Just like the leading concept, since your eyes are automatically searching for information along those lines, you can find his eyes easily and instinctively read his emotions. Humans can gather a lot of information by reading someone’s eyes, so when you place them in a easy-to-find spot in your composition, the viewer connects more naturally with what you are trying to portray.Rack Focus Image via Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Columbia Pictures. When you’re trying to pull off a rack focus shot, object placement is critical. Using the rule of thirds is a neat way to find where you should place those objects. In the shot above, both the glass and the actor carry a lot of visual weight when it comes to the information of this shot. The focus from the foreground to the background conveys that the glass has some sort of influence over the actor. You may say that the two subjects are too close together, but the closeness transmits a sense of urgency and immediacy to the viewer. Their distance is the perfect balance. Any farther would have separated the two, and any closer would block the actor’s face with the glass, ruining the ever-important emotions we’re watching in the actor. All in all, the rule of thirds may be a basic concept, but the impact it has on your shot composition is astronomical. Next time you are shooting something, turn on the grid feature on your camera and adjust from there. Trust me, you will come out with some awesome cinematic shots.Want more cinematography resources? And that’s from someone who knows what he is talking about.”You are reading here the words of a man who had a row with a Manchester United manager, someone he didn’t get on with.”But every time Alex Ferguson picked me to play in that famous red shirt, I went out and gave it my all. I will go to my grave certain of that.”And I played as hard as I could for three reasons.”Firstly, it was a matter of pure professional pride for me.”Secondly, because I wanted to show I was a half decent footballer.”And thirdly, and above all, because I was doing it for the supporters, those people who put their hands into their pockets for their hard-earned cash to watch the team and thus pay my wages.”That’s what I thought of when I was a Manchester United man, not that the manager wanted me out of the dressing-room.”There were Manchester United players who did not do those three things over the last few weeks and months.” last_img read more

Jim Harbaugh Shares What He Likes About Donald Trump

first_imgJim Harbaugh looks content from the sidelines.MADISON, WI – NOVEMBER 18: Head coach Jim Harbaugh of the Michigan Wolverines watches action during a game against the Wisconsin Badgers at Camp Randall Stadium on November 18, 2017 in Madison, Wisconsin. (Photo by Stacy Revere/Getty Images)Jim Harbaugh isn’t on a campaign trail, but the Michigan head coach manages to put himself in the news almost every day, not unlike a certain Republican presidential candidate. After Harbaugh blasted the NCAA, SEC, ACC, and others over the recent vote to ban satellite camps, SEC Network host Paul Finebaum compared him to Donald Trump, and he didn’t mean it in a flattering way. We don’t know Harbaugh’s political leanings, but he is spinning the comparison into a compliment.Harbaugh on being called Trump of college football: “The thing I like about Donald Trump is he’s not afraid to fight the establishment.”— Mark Snyder (@Mark__Snyder) April 14, 2016You can definitely draw that line from Trump to Harbaugh. We doubt you’d see Trump dancing on stage with Migos, though like Harbaugh and recruits, he may if he thought it’d give him a leg up with voters.last_img read more
