Video Tutorial: Composition, Framing and the 180° Rule

first_imgIf you’re just starting out or would like to brush up on your cinematography skills, then check out these great video tutorials to get great shots for your film.Professional filmmakers know that composition and framing are essential to conveying the director’s intended emotion to the viewer. There are a number of ways you could go about framing the same subject in a manner that changes the audience’s emotion of the given situation. For instance, the intimacy of any close up shot moves the audience that much closer to being inside the character’s mind.Lights Film School has a rundown of composition and framing that’s a great guide for filmmakers:Rules are meant to be broken. Many will emphasize the importance of the rule-of-thirds in photography and film because it is a great, tried and true method to compose shots. However, this is only a guideline. Some directors have made it a point to disregard this tenant of shooting, such as Wes Anderson’s style that features centered shots:Framing in CinematographyNext, let’s take a closer look on the details of framing. It’s important to have correct head room and lead room as this can establish the difference between a good shot and a bad shot. Avoid excessive dead space.Additionally, framing your shot with a subject in motion is called anticipatory framing. The camera must judge the movement of its subject. Instead of reacting to the subject, react with the subject with its direction and speed. Of course, all the same rules of framing apply: adjust head and lead room accordingly with a proper amount of dead space.Another great example from Lights Film School:The 180° RuleImage from WikimediaThe 180° rule is probably the most commonly practiced and cited rules in all of filmmaking. Imagine that there is an invisible axis between the camera and the subjects which are being filmed. Once you have established which side of the axis the camera will be on, the camera must remain on that same side as to not break the axis.Unless you’re intentionally breaking this shooting standard, most would advise against breaking the 180° rule.Do you have any comments about the 180° rule, anticipatory framing or composition? We would love to hear from you below.last_img read more

Back to Basics: The Rule of Thirds in Filmmaking

first_imgImage via Marvel Studios. In a typical shot, your subject should be somewhere within the grid divides, as you can see above. The subject can be both the character and the object, since they often work together. Each is at opposite sides of the frame, which draws equal attention to both subjects. Objects need room around them to enable the viewer to see them more clearly. If the character is in the middle of the frame, all attention who go to them, and the object would no longer be a critical piece of the frame. Using the Rule of Thirds can dramatically increase the look of your composition. Here’s a few tips on how to integrate this technique into your next shot.Cover image via Universal Pictures and Learn Online Video. When you’re first learning about cameras and shot composition, one of the basic concepts you encounter is the rule of thirds. If you haven’t heard of the rule yet, I like Grace Fussell‘s definition:Imagine a 3×3 grid on top of any image. You should align the key elements in the image according to this grid — at the ‘power points’ where the lines intersect, or along and within the vertical and horizontal lines. You can also combine these two arrangements for complex images with layers of subjects.Image via Shutterstock. As Fussell explains in this Shutterstock article, the lines on the 3×3 grid are the places where our eyes automatically look for information. When you put the main focus of your image along this grid, the result is more aesthetically pleasing to your viewer. If you are looking for the fundamentals of the rule of thirds in still images, check out Grace’s article. Here, I’ll focus on how to apply the rule of thirds to moving images.Placement Image via New Line Cinema.Another rule of thirds tactic is the concept of leading. This is when you place your subject on the opposite side of the frame from the object of his or her attention. This technique is psychological in nature because when your eyes look at incomplete information (such as an actor looking offscreen), they want to fill it to make it complete. In the image above, the subject is presenting something to a subject offscreen. Even though there is nothing in the left side of the shot, our minds automatically deduce that there is someone on the other side of that frame. If the subject had no lead room, the shot would just feel off.Eye Lines Image via Kvibe Productions.Using the rule of thirds is a great way to establish eye lines. Check out the shot above. Feels natural, right? Just like the leading concept, since your eyes are automatically searching for information along those lines, you can find his eyes easily and instinctively read his emotions. Humans can gather a lot of information by reading someone’s eyes, so when you place them in a easy-to-find spot in your composition, the viewer connects more naturally with what you are trying to portray.Rack Focus Image via Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Columbia Pictures. When you’re trying to pull off a rack focus shot, object placement is critical. Using the rule of thirds is a neat way to find where you should place those objects. In the shot above, both the glass and the actor carry a lot of visual weight when it comes to the information of this shot. The focus from the foreground to the background conveys that the glass has some sort of influence over the actor. You may say that the two subjects are too close together, but the closeness transmits a sense of urgency and immediacy to the viewer. Their distance is the perfect balance. Any farther would have separated the two, and any closer would block the actor’s face with the glass, ruining the ever-important emotions we’re watching in the actor. All in all, the rule of thirds may be a basic concept, but the impact it has on your shot composition is astronomical. Next time you are shooting something, turn on the grid feature on your camera and adjust from there. Trust me, you will come out with some awesome cinematic shots.Want more cinematography resources? Govt flogging petrol users

first_imgThe government has been relentlessly hiking the price of petrol and burdening it with heavy taxes as it sees it essentially as the rich man’s fuel. However, this does not seem to be the solution to the oil sector’s problems that run much deeper.Official data reveals that while the consumption of petrol in the country ranges between 1.1 to 1.2 million tonnes a month, that of diesel is nearly five times as much at five to 5.5 million tonnes each month.A senior Indian Oil Corp (IOC) official told Mail Today that given the much higher volumes of diesel sold in the market, any increase in the price of the fuel brings in more revenue than petrol. The lower volumes of petrol cannot cover up the huge gap created by selling diesel, kerosene and LPG below market price, he explained. However, while petrol price has been raised by as much as 32 per cent in eight successive hikes during the last 11 months, the government has been shying away from raising the price of diesel even though the underrecoveries are much higher at Rs 18 per litre. The gap between petrol and diesel prices has now gone up to a whopping Rs 25 per litre and this is also causing a shift in demand towards diesel-fuelled cars and sports utility vehicles (SUVs). Oil company officials also say that the concept of petrol being purely a rich man’s fuel needs to be revisited since two-wheeler and small car owners also use petrol to run their vehicles. The IOC official said that the base price of petrol is currently at around Rs 36.52 a litre, while the rest of the price component consists of various Central and state levies. Excise duty and other Central government levies on petrol add up to over Rs 30 per litre. In addition, the Delhi government imposes a 20 per cent sales tax on the fuel.advertisementIn contrast, the levies on diesel, which is considered to be a fuel used by the vote-catching farm sector and public transport utilities, attracts much lower taxes. While the Central government’s levies on diesel work out to around Rs 10 a litre, the state government imposes a lower 12.5 per cent sales tax. Interestingly, the retail price of both fuels include a customs duty element, even though they are produced within the country and are not imported. The oil marketing companies say this duty is included as it enables them to pass on a part of the five per cent customs duty that the government levies on crude oil imports to consumers. Senior officials of the oil companies are of the view that it makes little sense to levy this customs duty on crude oil, as refined products such as diesel, LPG and kerosene have to be sold at subsidised prices.”The finance ministry first takes away the money from the oil companies in the form of tax as it wants to reduce the fiscal deficit but has to give the money back to the oil companies as compensation for the subsidy,” an oil company official said. “In the process a lot of time is lost and the oil companies have to borrow money at high rates of interest to finance crude imports,” he explained. The fact that the customs duty is levied on the value of the imports makes matters worse as each time the price of crude goes up the duty that has to be paid also increases, putting a greater burden on the oil companies and the consumers.last_img read more

Greek-American Mike Moustakas Homers As Brewers Beat Cardinals 5-2 (Video)

first_imgST. LOUIS — Yasmani Grandal is making the most out of his consistent playing time.Mike Moustakas and Grandal homered to help the Milwaukee Brewers beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-2 on Saturday night.Milwaukee moved four games behind St. Louis for the National League Central lead. The Brewers remained one game behind the Chicago Cubs for the second wild card spot. The Cubs, who beat Pittsburgh, cut the Cardinals’ division lead to three games.“It’s two weeks left of intense baseball,” Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. “Wins are really valuable.”Only one of the two runs Brewers starter Jordan Lyles allowed was earned. He gave up six hits and struck out four over six innings.“The curveball wasn’t doing anything special today,” Lyles said. “We had to use all four pitches and (Grandal) did a nice job of noticing that and he kept putting down the right numbers.”The Brewers won their eighth game out of their last nine and improved to 8-1 when Lyles (11-8) starts this season.“He’s executing pitches,” Counsell said. “There might be one mistake it doesn’t detract him ever, a ball in the middle, he keeps making pitches and the stuff works.”Milwaukee Brewers’ Mike Moustakas hops on to home plate after hitting a two-run home run during the fourth inning of a baseball game against the St. Louis Cardinals Saturday, Sept. 14, 2019, in St. Louis. (AP Photo/Jeff Roberson)Jay Jackson, Drew Pomeranz, Junior Guerra combined for a scoreless seventh and eighth inning. Josh Hader earned his 32nd save in 38 opportunities.Grandal walked and scored on a fielder’s choice groundout by Eric Thames to give the Brewers a 3-2 lead in the sixth.Grandal drove a Tyler Webb changeup 424 feet into the left-centerfield seats in the eighth to make it 5-2. Grandal’s 27th home run of the year tied his career high and his 73 RBIs is a career high for a season.“Knowing I’d be in the lineup whether it’s a lefty or a righty is huge,” Grandal said. “Being able to game-plan for those days, whether it’s a righty or a lefty and just being able to make adjustments throughout the year. Seeing what’s working, seeing what’s not working, how my swing is working, how they are pitching to me. In the past I just couldn’t quite do that.”Milwaukee Brewers’ Yasmani Grandal pumps his fist as he rounds the bases after hitting a two-run home run during the eighth inning of a baseball game against the St. Louis Cardinals, Saturday, Sept. 14, 2019, in St. Louis. (AP Photo/Jeff Roberson)Grandal’s 10 homers from the right-side of the plate have helped fuel his surge. He had just 16 career home runs from the right side before this season.“He’s carried us offensively in a lot of way in a good part of this stretch,” Counsell said.Moustakas’ two-run home run in the fourth inning tied the game 2-2, snapping a 22-inning scoreless streak by Cardinals starter Jack Flaherty. It also broke a 32-inning scoreless streak for Cardinals starters at home spanning six games.“He’s just been big in the middle of the lineup,” Counsell said of Moustakas. “He’s had some huge games, some huge home runs, lots of big hits.”Hitting in the 3 spot, Moose launches a homer at 22 degrees to tie the game at 2-2. Probably just a coincidence. #ThisIsMyCrew pic.twitter.com/qkVusQUiod— Milwaukee Brewers (@Brewers) September 15, 2019Flaherty (10-8) needed 102 pitches to get through six innings. He gave up three runs on five hits and a pair of walks as St. Louis had its two-game winning streak snapped.Flaherty matched a season-high 10 strikeouts and became the first Cardinals pitcher with more than 200 strikeouts in a season since Carlos Martínez (217 in 2017). Flaherty is the 19th different pitcher to reach 200 strikeouts this season which is the most in the Modern Era.“I’d rather win,” Flaherty said when asked about the strikeout total.Tommy Edman’s solo homer started a two-run Cardinals rally in the second. Harrison Bader followed with a single, moved to second on a Flaherty sacrifice and scored on a Yasmani Grandal throwing error while he was stealing third.“He just did a good job of kind of changing his approach throughout the game,” Edman said of Lyles. “He was going with more of the fastballs earlier and really went to that off speed stuff the second time through the lineup and kept us off balance.”WELCOME BACKBrewers second baseman Keston Hiura made his first appearance since Aug. 30, when he left in the fifth inning with a strained left hamstring. Hiura struck out in a pinch hitting appearance in the ninth.TRAINING ROOMBrewers: RHP Brandon Woodruff (left oblique strain) threw a 25-pitch bullpen in what the team hopes is a final tune-up before being activated from the Injured List. C Manny Piña (concussion) is almost ready to resume catching activities soon.UP NEXTBrewers: RHP Chase Anderson (6-4, 4.57 ERA) gets the start in the finale of the three-game series against St. Louis on Sunday. He is 1-1 with a 2.67 ERA in six career starts at Busch Stadium.Cardinals: RHP Michael Wacha (6-7, 4.97 ERA) will seek to pick up his first win since July 19. He was held Milwaukee to two or less runs in each of his last five starts against them.By: Joe Harris, Associated PressTweetPinShare77 Shareslast_img read more
