Stephen F. Austin Clinches Southland Tournament Title

Austin concluded a perfect run through conference opponents this season with a 3-1 victory over Sam Houston State Sunday afternoon’s Southland Conference Tournament championship inside the Farris Center in Conway, Ark. Senior outside hitter Corin Evans notched her 14th double-double of the year and her first of the conference tournament to boost the Ladyjacks over the Bearkats in the championship match.Set OneThe Bearkats stormed out with a powerful performance, handing SFA its first opening-set loss of the tournament with a 25-20 result. Behind sophomore Breanne Chausse’s five kills, the Kats tabbed a .366 team-hitting percentage on 22 assists and one service ace. The Ladyjacks were clicking as well, logging a .303 hitting mark and a pair of blocks on the defensive side of the ball. Sam Houston State’s offense proved too strong, however, as the Bearkats closed out the set with a 5-1 scoring run.Set TwoSFA revved up its play in the second set, connecting 13 kills on 31 attempts to go along with a trio of blocks over the Sam Houston State offense. Corin Evans, Ann Hollas and Xariah Williams each added three terminations in the set to power the Ladyjacks’ offense to a .323 attack mark. Junior Bailey Mulder stamped the set for Stephen F. Austin with a service ace that capped a three-point scoring run and gave the Ladyjacks 25-17 win to even the match.Set ThreeDefense was cinched up one more notch by the Ladyjacks in the third set as the team combined for 21 digs and three blocks to limit the Kats’ offense to a .130 attack percentage. Chausse was once again a huge factor for the Bearkats, leading the squad with six kills, five digs and a block assist to up her hitting percentage to .550 for the match. SFA proved too powerful, however, as Evans and Taya Mitchell combined for a block to close out the set 25-20 in favor of the ‘Jacks. There were a total of 10 ties and five lead changes throughout the third set.Set FourStephen F. Austin saved its best offensive performance for last, ringing up a staggering .419 kill percentage after tucking away 14 kills on 31 attempts. Sam Houston State mounted an offensive effort at the net but fell on the wrong side of 10 attack errors. Hollas sealed the match for SFA with her ninth kill of the afternoon to grab the 25-17 win for the set and secure the 3-1 win.In addition to clinching the Southland Conference Volleyball Tournament championship Sunday, SFA secured an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, which is set to begin Thursday, Dec. 5. First and second round competition at the NCAA Tournament will be held at 16 non-predetermined campus sites. At each campus site, four teams will compete in single-elimination first round competition. The two advancing teams then compete against each other in single-elimination second round competition at the same campus site. The winning team from each of the 16 second rounds advances to the regional round.The Ladyjacks will learn the location of their regional site during the NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball selection show Sunday, Dec. 1.
